Eternal Re-occurrence

Chakra Yoga Spiritual Holistic Health

A short essay upon the eternal reoccurrence of phenomena.

The Creation is finite in size and eternal in timespan, thus any phenomena that can occur will eternally re-occur because a finite arrangement of patterns within a finite body (the Creation) with an eternal lifespan will eventually come up with the same pattern as it shifts through all possible patterns (arrangements of the Creation) within Its eternal timespan.

Anything that has occured - you and I on this world in this universe today - will eternally reoccur within the timespan of the Creative Aspect (the Creation/Shakti) of the Self that is eternity. This means that our universe, this world, and you and I are eternally reoccurring patterns within a mysterious phenomena called The Creation (Creative Aspect of The Self)

Bhagavad Gita: 8:19

The Creation, in all its almost infinite variety, repeatedly arises and then merges back into My Oneness(The Eternal Self).

THE ONE SELF: The One and The Many Little Ones

The Totality of Existence, the All, the One Phenomenon that is Everything, eternal, without beginning nor end, unborn and undying, and the One True Identity of Life, the Universe and Everything. It is what was here before you and I appeared and what will be here after you and I have disappeared. It is the one, real, identity of existence behind and beyond the individual, it is the Real “I” – the One, Eternal Self.

All the many, the souls and all other individuals, arise within the Creative Aspect of the One. We can experience them as “The Many Little Ones”, the One experiencing Itself in a multiplicity of many – variety and diversity - via Its Creative Aspect – The Creation...

We can label that part of existence where all things happen as the “The Creation” or “Shakti” or “The Imagination of God” or "The Creative Aspect of The One Self", or anything we so choose that expresses this concept, as the label is never the thing. In this part of existence, all phenomena of variety, diversity, and multiplicity occur. I will use the label “The Creation” when referencing this part of the Self.

A rearrangement of the elements of a finite set. In this case, the set is the sum total of all the arrangements that can possibly occur within The Creation – The Creation in its Totality.

Some will argue that The Creation is an infinite area, but I disagree. I believe that it is finite as it exists within the Totality of the Self and thus cannot be infinite. At first thought The Creation may appear infinite due to the Its sheer size, the almost infinite permutations of phenomena that exist within it, and the eternal rearrangement of these phenomena – the eternal continuum of transformation of the substance of The Creation that appears as a huge variety of phenomena that are in an eternally permanent state of flux (a continued flow of change). On subsequent consideration we realize that The Creation and all possible permutations of It is a finite phenomena that exists within the eternal Mystery that is The Totality of The One Self. It exists within something else, in this case the Totality - The One Total Self - , thus it not infinite, it is finite, it is contained within the Totality.

There used to be a scientific belief that the observer and the observed were two separate entities. Quantum Physics changed this belief by proving that the observer and the observed are in fact one experience. Thus there is no separation of a little self and an observable Universe, there is in fact only Self – Total Unity within the appearances of diversity that occur in the small area of the Self that we can call The Creation.

The individual – body, heart (emotions), mind, and soul - all these phenomena are experiences belonging to the one Self. In spiritual understanding, we identify with the Real Self and realize the individual to be an experience that occurs within the Creative Aspect of The One Real Absolute Self.

There is no real separation because there is only one entity in existence - the One Self (The Eternal Totality of All). Throughout recorded history, spiritually enlightened souls have known about this well established fact. Here is a very small example of such texts;

“There is no division within Suchness. Just simply one single is this Suchness, not two, nor three.”

- Buddhism. Perfection of Wisdom in Eight Thousand Lines 31.1

“The sage clasps the Primal Unity,
Testing by it everything under heaven.”

- Taoism. Tao Te Ching 22

“He is the one God, hidden in all beings, all-pervading, the Self within all beings, watching over all works, dwelling in all beings, the witness, the perceiver, the only one, free from qualities.”

- Hinduism. Svetasvatara Upanishad 6.11

“Say, He is God, the One!
God, the eternally Besought of all!
He neither begets nor was begotten.
And there is none comparable unto Him.”

- Islam. Qur'an 112

“Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.”

- Judaism and Christianity. Bible, Deuteronomy 6.4

"There is one eternal reality that pervades everything and everyone. In the midst of the many, it is the indivisible oneness. In all (so-called) separate beings, it is never separated or divided. Perception of this reality is pure, or sattvic, knowledge."

- Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9

“All this world is pervaded by Me in My unmanifested form (aspect); all beings exist in Me, but I do not dwell in them (4). I am the father of this world, the mother, the dispenser of fruits of action, and grandfather; the one thing to be known, the Purifier, the syllable Om, and also the Rik, the Sama and the Yajus also (17). I am the goal, the supporter, the Lord, the witness, the Abode, the shelter, the friend, the origin, dissolution, the foundation, the treasure-house and the seed imperishable (18).”

- Bhagavad Gita, Chapter 9 (Sutra number in brackets in the text)

“I am the true Self in the heart of all creatures...I am the source of all things...I am the beginning, middle and ending of everything created...I am the seed of all beings. For without Me, whether animate or inanimate, nothing can exist...there is no end to my manifestations...just know that I am, and that I hold up the whole cosmos with only a fragment of my being.”

- Bhagavad Gita - 10:20

If Existence is eternal then the probability of our Universe eternally re-occuring exactly, as it has today, is 1 (100% certain).

If Existence is eternal then the probability of anything happening, that can happen, is 1 (100% certain).

If time is the measurement of changes, and our universe is in a constant state of change (yet its basic energy remains the same), then we can estimate that Existence is most probably an eternal phenomenon, time being one of its qualities.

If Existence is Eternal, then all possible permutations of the Universe that can happen, will happen. This means that all the almost infinite multi-verses of TimeSpace events that can happen, will happen.

You and I exist and are therefore part of the pattern of Existence.

We are inherently part of the possibilities that CAN happen in Existence. Why? Because we ARE in Existence and this means that we inherently belong to the myriad of near-infinite possible expressions of the Universe, and of Existence.

Evidence from ancient scriptures

Here we find the same idea expressed in the text of one of the world's most ancient books - The Bhagavad Gita:

Bhagavad Gita 2.12

na tv evaham jatu nasam
na tvam neme janadhipah
na caiva na bhavisyamah
sarve vayam atah param

Never was there a time when I did not exist, nor you, nor all these kings; nor in the future shall any of us cease to be.

In the Vedas, in the Katha Upanishad as well as in the Shvetasvatara Upanishad, it is said that God is the creator and maintainer of all souls. Souls experience different circumstances due to the soul's behaviour interacting with God's Laws that govern all aspects of the Creation (shakti/multiplicity/variety/diversity). So our different situations arise according to our activities and the reaction to our activities from God's Laws. This interaction of the soul with God's Laws is called "The Law of Karma."

The same Vedic truth given to Arjuna is given to all persons in the world who pose themselves as very learned but factually have but a poor fund of knowledge. The Lord says clearly that He Himself, Arjuna and all the kings who are assembled on the battlefield are eternally individual beings and that the Lord is eternally the maintainer of the individual living entities both in their conditioned and in their liberated situations. The Lord is the supreme individual person, and Arjuna, the Lord’s eternal associate, and all the kings assembled there are individual eternal persons. It is not that they did not exist as individuals in the past, and it is not that they will not remain eternal persons. Their individuality existed in the past, and their individuality will continue in the future without interruption. Therefore, there is no cause for lamentation for anyone.

Being alive means that we are inherently part of the pattern of Existence. In the entire Existence is an inherent statistical certainty that creates you and I.

This means that Existence holds a statistical template for you and I.

It means that, as we are today, we are part of ALL of the possible patterns and processes that are part of Existence.

Today's Universe is one of the almost infinite possible patterns that the Universe can take.

If Existence is eternal, today's Universe and all other possible permutations of our Universe (the multi-verses) will eternally reoccur.

This is what I think our ancestors were trying to convey with the concepts of "soul" and "re-incarnation."

There is the eternally re-occuring possibility that you will disagree with this!!

The whole concept of eternal re-occurrence could prove distressing if we forget that our deepest identity is not the body/mind, but is actually Existence itself - That which is not limited by the life and events of the individual.

This identification with Existence, rather than with the temporary experiences of the body/mind individual, is that which is sometimes referred to as "Self Realization" or "God Realization."
