Relaxation Breathing Technique
The Golden Tool to relaxation and self control

"As the mind, so the breath. As the breath, so the mind."

Taking control of our breathing is the most ancient and most successful way to calm, relaxation, and taking control of our mind. Next time you become stressed or anxious, check your breathing. Is it short, sharp, difficult, through the mouth, pain and tension across the chest? All these are symptoms of emotional arousal, the hind-brain kicking in and creating those "fight-or-flight" hormones that naturally cause stress and anxiety.

Taking control of our breath: 7/11 Deep Breathing

Learn a special type of breathing, not into your chest but deep into your tummy or diaphragm which is below your chest. The important thing here is that the out-breath must be longer than the in-breath, even if just by one or two seconds. By elongating the out-breath, this causes stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system - the part of our nervous system responsible for relaxation. This is a basic law of biology and if you breathe in this way then your body will have no choice but to relax.

It may take a few minutes but the body will respond regardless of what your mind is thinking. Experience this now. Sit (or lie) down and close your eyes for a little while. Just become aware of your breathing and breathe in to the count of seven and breathe out to the count of eleven. You can hold for a couple of seconds at the bottom of the out breath if that's comfortable for you.

If you can't manage a seven second inbreath, then take the longest inbreath that you can (eg: 4 seconds) and simply extend the outbreath to be at least two seconds longer than the inbreath (eg: 6 seconds). Do this at least 20 times and then begin to increase the length of the inbreath and the outbreath, always ensuring that the outbreath is at least two seconds longer than the inbreath.

The Purpose of Affirmations

"As we think, so we become...as we change our thoughts, so too our holistic experiences change mirroring our thinking."

When we are young, in childhood and adolescence, or at any other formative time in our life, when we are learning new attitudes towards life, then some of these attitudes may be life-negative and thus bring suffering to us and to others. At such times as mentioned, our mind is very open to subconscious conditioning and programming by the people around us. The subconscious mind is very automatic and works on patterns of habit. Once something is learned and becomes a habit then the habit becomes part of our everyday experience until we choose to change the habit. As we all know habits can be quite difficult to change.

Using the seven chakra system we can observe that our daily, holistic experience of life is entirely dependent upon our attitudes to each of the seven centers.

This is where healthy chakra affirmations become our powerful tool to change the way we think and thus our experience of life: thinking, feeling, and action - our holistic behaviour.

The subconscious mind listens in to what is going on in the conscious mind. When we perform affirmations, we repeat healthy phrases in our conscious mind and we TEACH OUR SUBCONSCIOUS MIND NEW, POSITIVE, AND HEALTHY HABITS OF THOUGHT, FEELING, AND ACTION. We can remove unhealthy habits and insert healthy and powerful habits. We can heal and improve every area of our life.

As we think, so we become

A positive attitude is looking at the brighter side of events and disregarding the negative aspects. Simply stated, it is like perceiving a glass as ‘half full’ rather than ‘half empty’. A positive attitude to life and events helps in quick resolution of grief and coping with other life situations easily.

There is an old saying in the Hindu scriptures which says ‘think and it shall be’. The way you think is the way you are. If you are prone to always look at the negative side, it is likely to affect every aspect of your life. If you keep on thinking that ‘this is not achievable’ or ‘I am not capable enough to do that,’ you are most likely to fail in your attempts. On the contrary, a positive attitude encourages you and increases the possibility of success. Whether you succeed or fail is another matter altogether, but a positive attitude enables you to give the challenge your best shot and you get the satisfaction of having put your best foot forward.

The key to be free from negative thoughts and emotions is to be aware of the transient emotional shifts. Affirmations are a common and popular method of developing awareness of the ‘self’ and achieving a positive mental attitude.

Affirmations are repetition of positive statements that are repeated mentally or aloud. These may be about situations, habits or goals. These are positive assertions that you make to yourself repeatedly till they have a permanent affect on your subconscious mind. There is nothing supernatural about it; it is simply mind power that is instrumental in transforming a negative outlook into a positive attitude till it becomes a habit. The change can be equated with a change in the shape of a hard rock by a drop of water falling on it over a period of time.

Mere repetitions of empty meaningless sentences are not affirmations. Affirmations have to be powerful sentences that inspire and motivate. They must be strong enough so as to have a long lasting impact on your psyche. Once negative and restrictive thoughts are transformed into positive and constructive ones they have the capacity to improve your life.

CHAKRA AFFIRMATIONS

When you have understood the simply seven chakra holistic life system then you can understand how easy it is to create your own affirmations to help you with each chakra. PREPARATION
  • Find a comfortable posture; standing, sitting, or lying down
  • Do relaxation breathing for five minutes before starting the affirmation
  • Keep doing the relaxation breathing while you do the affirmation
  • The out-breath affirmation is longer than the in-breath so that your out-breath will also be several seconds longer than your in-breath as to produce real-relaxation breathing which helps the affirmation
