SOCIAL MATURITY

MENTAL AND SOCIAL MATURATION

The ability to discuss topics and beliefs. The ability to be tolerant and understanding concerning differences in opinion in individuals and in groups.

The Individual

Every person has the right to have their own views, opinions, and paradigms concerning life. This is a right of the free - freedom of thought.

Each person has a unique paradigm; a unique perception of experience, learning, view, and opinion. This is a beautiful aspect of the variety that is life.

Groups and Societies

We live in groups and societies. This is the nature of human life. The human being is an interdependent social creature whose survival, growth, maintenance, education, livelihood, and maturity is mutually dependent upon others.

To live with others we need to learn how to be tolerant of others whose opinions and beliefs differ from our own. This is a sign of intellectual, emotional, and social maturity.

Social Standards For Harmonious Interdependent Living

To live with others we need to agree upon basic common standards of social behavior that are based upon healthy social expectations of "considering others."

These common standards are called:

  1. Social norms.

  2. Manners.

  3. Social standards.

  4. Social ethics.

  5. Social rules and regulations.

  6. Guidelines for Social Cohesion and Harmony.

Each and every group and society needs social standards so that it may function at a reasonable level of health and harmony.

Differing Paradigms

Different individuals and different groups have differing views, opinions, and paradigms.

This is the nature of diversity, variety, and multiplicity.

As long as our differences do not harm others, then difference should be:

  1. Acknowledged.

  2. Respected.

  3. Discussed.

  4. Understood.

  5. Enjoyed.

Immaturity, Xenophobia, and Narrow-mindedness

Immature people are generally intolerant of the differences that variety produces.

The immature person is frightened and neurotically threatened by the differences that variety creates.

In their fear, they cling increasingly tightly to their belief and paradigm. They become narrow-minded, obstinate, fanatical, xenophobic, and full of hatred towards that which they find threatening.

They use their own paradigm as a wall against variety and as a tool to attack other people's right to express their diverse opinions, views, and beliefs.

They close themselves off from any influence that could threaten their belief that their paradigm is "the truth and the only truth."

The immature suffer from:

  1. Extremism.

  2. Dogma: A rigid belief system that is believed to be "the only truth."

  3. Idolatry.

  4. Xenophobia: Fear of paradigms that are different from their own.

  5. Intolerance of differing belief and opinion.

  6. Insecurity.

  7. Attachment.

  8. Superiority and Inferiority complex.

  9. Hatred of variety.

  10. Narrow mindedness.

  11. Compulsive (dogmatic) and tyrannical need to assert their beliefs as "the truth."

  12. Intellectual and social rigidity.

These, and many other, negative thought-forms disturb their ability to experience a healthy, happy, mature, and benevolent life.

Creation IS diversity, variety, and multiplicity. There is no escaping this beautiful fact. Without variety there would be no color to life.

It is lovely to have beliefs and paradigms and it is also important to realize the variety and multiplicity that is creation.
